In 2004, Dynegy sold Illinois Power to Ameren Corp. for $2.3 billion. Illinois Power, now a primary business unit of Ameren Corp., is an energy provider with annual revenues of about $2.4 billion. Ameren delivers electricity to 1.2 milllion customers and natural gas to 840,000 customers in central and southern Illinois, which makes it the third largest Illinois natural gas distribution operation in total number of customers. In 2006, the Illinois Commerce Commission approved Ameren's auction plan which would allow them to buy power through auction. In 2010, three Illinois utilities (AmerenCIPS, AmerenCILCO, and AmerenIP) went through reorganization into a single public utility, Ameren Illinois Company. Illinois Power contributes through a political action committee called Dyna-ILN PAC and the Illinois Power Employee Political Involvement Committee.

Illinois Power/Ameren Corp. is a career patron of Senate Republican Leader Frank Watson.

From 1993 through December 31, 2005, Dynegy, Inc. and Illinois Power gave $1.795 million to candidates for Illinois statewide constitutional and legislative office, 59% of which was contributed to Republicans.
