C. William Pollard owns the Downers Grove-based ServiceMaster, a network of service companies which includes TruGreen (lawn care and landscaping), Terminix (pest control), American Residential Services/Rescue Rooter (plumbing, drain cleaning, heating ventilation and air conditioning maintenance and repair), American Home Shield (home warranty services), ServiceMaster Clean (heavy cleaning), Merry Maids (residential cleaning), Furniture Medic and AmeriSpec (home inspection services). ServiceMaster and its subsidiaries have numerous contracts with the state. In addition to his work at ServiceMaster, Pollard serves as a director of two other public companies: Herman Miller, Inc. and UnumProvident Corporation. He also serves as a director or trustee of a number of educational, religious and not-for-profit organizations, including Wheaton College, The Drucker Foundation and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

C. William Pollard and ServiceMaster are career patrons of former Attorney General and unsuccessful gubernatorial candidate Jim Ryan (R), and had contributed $194,500 to his campaign as of June 30, 2002. Pollard contributed $45,750 of that amount.

From 1993 to 2002, C. William Pollard and ServiceMaster contributed a combined $264,000 to candidates for Illinois statewide constitutional and legislative office, 95% of which was given to Republicans. Since 2002, C. William Pollard has given $9,500 to statewide candidates as well as the DuPage Business Council.
